Rush seat weaving work that speaks for itself

Every chair in this gallery arrived with a problem. A broken seat, a rotted frame, a pattern lost to time. We stripped, repaired, and wove each one by hand. The result is not a restoration in the glossy magazine sense. It is a chair that someone can sit in again without worrying.

Natural materials

Bulrush, cattail, and seagrass sourced from local harvesters and woven while still responsive.

Hand-woven finish

One weaver per chair from first strand to final knot. No assembly lines, no shortcuts.

Built to last

Frames inspected and reglued before weaving begins. A seat is only as strong as the wood beneath it.

Featured restoration projects

A selection of chairs and benches that came to us broken and left ready for daily use. Each one carries the marks of its age and the strength of new weave.

These projects show the range of what rush seat weaving can do for different chair styles, periods, and conditions.

What owners said

Feedback from people who trusted us with chairs that held memories.

"I sent photos of my grandmother's chair with the seat completely gone. They replied within a day, told me honestly what the frame needed, and gave me a clear price. When it came back, the bulrush smelled like summer hay and the seat was firm under my weight. I use it every morning."

Margaret Chen
Retired teacher, Ballarat

"We run a small cafe and had six bentwood chairs with cane rotted through. They matched the original weave pattern and had them back before our busy season. Three years later, the seats still hold up to daily customers. That is durability you can measure."

David O'Connor
Cafe owner, Melbourne

"The historical society needed a documented restoration on a bench we could not replace. They photographed every stage, used period-appropriate materials, and treated the piece with respect. The final report was thorough enough for our archives. Good craftsmanship and good record keeping."

Sarah Whitmore
Museum curator, Bendigo

"I found four market chairs with no seats at all. They helped me choose a herringbone pattern that suited our dining room, not just the chairs. The weave tightened beautifully as it dried. Now they sit around our table every night and I notice the pattern every time."

Fiona Kowalski
Home renovator, Daylesford

"I was worried about sending an antique stool through the post. They talked me through packing it safely and confirmed receipt the same day it arrived. The checkerboard seat they wove is exactly what I hoped for. Communication was clear throughout."
